Samenvatting

Recommendations are put forward for signing in transport-related areas for both able-bodied and disabled people. The views expressed are the outcome of studies and research carried out in Paris by COLITRAH, the Liaison Committee for the Transport of People with Disabilities, in connection with the particular difficulties experienced by intellectually-impaired people when travelling. The complexity of transport systems and the regular occurrence of interchanges underline the need for coherence and continuity in signing systems. Suggestions are made for an improved system of signing using few and simple symbols. A sign is considered as being SHAPE + SYMBOL + COLOUR + BACKGROUND, a combination which should be regarded as an indissoluble whole. Colour in particular is important to people with visual or intellectual impairments. Guidelines are suggested for a master plan for signs within which sub-systems may be set up.
