Samenvatting

The potential for intelligent headlamps that provide an adaptive light distribution in all traffic situations with and without oncoming traffic is outlined. HID (high intensity discharge) technology and adaptive lighting systems are described. Several approaches for fulfilling different requirements on the illumination of street scenery are outlined. The easiest way is switching on or switching off additional modules in the headlamp. The multiple use of elements within the headlamp reduces waste of construction volume. Power control of the HID system can increase light output by 36% from a given module which is suitable for the increased visibility distances required on motorways. Methods of swivelling headlamps are explored. Software and control concepts are explained. The impact of adaptive headlamp systems on traffic safety is discussed with reference to curve lighting, motorway lighting and junction lighting. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123380.
