Samenvatting

The purpose of this review was to analyze systematically the characteristics of twenty-two instructor-led parent-oriented programs. An objective of each of these programs was to prepare parents to prevent their children's alcohol and other drug use. To conduct this program review, the author developed 120 criteria for analyzing and reviewing the characteristics of the programs. The criteria were grouped under five main topics or components: 1) general characteristics; 2) instructional characteristics; 3) skills addressed; 4) generalization methods; and 5) evaluation. The author then trained two uninformed reviewers to review with reliability each program. The results of the reviews are summarized according to program characteristics. Recommendations are based upon the review results. These results and recommendations can help prospective users make an informed decision before they adopt or invest in a program. (A)
