Samenvatting

A conclusion that could be drawn from the social unacceptability of the road safety record is to suggest that a new approach for analysing the system of road safety is required. The review of four current analysis techniques supports the application of a new approach to analysing the problem of road safety. One analysis technique that is ideal to explore complex situations, particularly where the responsibility for control is decentralised, is systems theory. The application of this technique to the problem of road safety has some potential benefits that are uniquely suitable for the current management processes associated with reducing the human suffering caused by road accidents.
