This article reports on the communications technology employed in the T-REX project in the urban area of Denver, in the state of Colorado, USA. T-REX is to improve and expand highway and public transport capacity. One portion of this project involves low-power sensors for traffic monitoring on arterial roads surrounding the construction area to detect congestion, using internet protocols for communication to the traffic management centre. The size of the network caused some delay in communication but software tools were developed to overcome this. Levels of congestion are made publicly available on a web site. For the covering abstract see ITRD E118381.
