The first part of this Paper summarises recent developments in the application of the Home Zones concept in the UK. This includes the ongoing Pilot Programme, which began in August 1999; a new, and as yet incomplete, legal framework for the establishment of Home Zones; significant policy support for the concept; and the announcement of central government funding for local authority schemes. Two contrasting schemes are then described, with which the Author has been personally involved: the large Morice Town Home Zone in Plymouth, part of the Pilot Programme; and a much smaller scheme in Clark Street, Whitechapel, London. Both schemes involve the redesign of existing streets, often referred to as `retrofit' schemes. A series of conclusions are drawn from these case studies, in the light of recent developments in the policy and legal framework.
