The task of building a European point of interest database.

Navigable map databases are being used in TICS (Traffic Information Centres) applications around the globe. These databases must contain very detailed geographic information to be effective. Because this information is compiled from varying quality levels of source material, achieving this type of detail often requires extensive field research, collection and verification efforts. These same meticulous efforts are also required in the building and updating of a point of interest (POI) database. This paper outlines the collection and verification efforts required to produce a European POI database, including specific data research, and collection methods. It compares the different methods used in producing a POI database for the cities of Rome and Vienna.
