This chapter discusses technical innovation in transport vehicles and infrastructure, and in the operation and management of transport systems. The first group of innovations includes those in: (1) individual road passenger vehicles, especially cars; (2) buses; (3) commercial vehicles; (4) rail infrastructure and rolling stock; and (5) road and airport infrastructure construction. In the second group, the main technical innovations are in radio data based systems, whose main application areas are: (1) demand management; (2) travel information; (3) traffic information; (4) traffic control; (5) vehicle control; (6) parking management; and (7) organisation and general management of urban and interurban traffic. management of urban and interurban traffic. The chapter also discusses the operational impacts, costs, benefits, and dissemination patterns of technical innovation.
