Progress in limiting gaseous and noise emissions from heavy goods vehicles is outlined and further measures forseeable in the short, medium and long term are assessed. The effects of the increased engine power of lorries are then considered. It is found that speed limits will be broken more often, fuel consumption will increase and emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and noise will increase. Proposals are made to addresss the situation including a greater enforcement of speed limits and an agreement among manufacturers to limit installed power to a figure such as 10hp/tonne.
