This paper represents a panel discussion to review the state of the art in commercial driver assessment and to identify new opportunities. Subjects covered included advanced truck systems to assist drivers, adaptive cruise control, driver information systems and safety improvements; research into driver fatigue and safe driving procedures, including accident data; and research into commercial vehicle and driver safety, involving human factors research and the development of new management practices. Conclusions focused on becoming more data driven while developing correlating research programs. Areas identified for further research included the involvement of at-fault passenger vehicles in collisions with commercial vehicles, and the commercialisation of proven safety technologies.
