Technology has potential application to pedestrian and cyclist safety. The areas reviewed are improved conspicuity for bicycles and motor vehicles and pedestrian and cyclist detection at signalised crossings. Improved bicycle tail-lighting is more conspicuous, but the critical problem of frontal conspicuity remains. Improved detection of bicycles and pedestrians at signalised crossings appears to have the potential to improve both safety and mobility. The PUFFIN type crossing may improve the mobility of pedestrians by allocating green time to both pedestrians and motor vehicles more efficiently, while catering for pedestrians who require long times to cross.
