Efficient transport systems are critical to secure national economic and social well-being. Technology is an enabler and can deliver significant benefits and cause step changes in the way people and freight move around. Looking ahead, it is clear that rapid technology innovations bring with them enormous opportunities as well as significant emergent challenges. It is recognised across the transport industry that better anticipation of future technological possibilities can better inform what actions are needed now to incentivise and support appropriate measures to maximise benefits across all modes of the transport system. Using a horizon scan methodology, this report identifies five drivers (cost; health and well-being; environmental impact; customer experience; and demand) and four key technology themes (energy; autonomy; connectivity; and analytics) for technology development in transportation.
