This paper presents the technology transfer programme of the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB), and the results that it has achieved so far for local government in Australia. It aims to share experiences, as part of an international information exchange and cooperation programme. ARRB's technology transfer programme for local government has been operating for two years, and is beginning to achieve more positive results. More practitioners are making greater use of available research findings and information services. Future research is being more directed towards meeting their specific needs. Surveys of user needs have identified several areas that require new research to meet them. ARRB has undertaken specific them. ARRB has undertaken specific research to: (1) evaluate pavement management systems (PMS) software packages on the market; (2) prepare a manual of good practice for unsealed roads, to improve construction and maintenance practices; (3) review quality management systems for local government, and perhaps prepare a quality assurance guidelines document for road pavement construction; and (4) design of non-arterial roads to improve safety and amenities in local areas. A process of monitoring and evaluating technology results is in progress.
