Telematics is the result of the evolution of telecommunication and informatics. This paper presents an overview of the possible consequences of the advancement of telematics. Special attention is given to the effect of development in telecommunication infrastructure upon the spatial pattern of activities and transportation. This problem will be structured by considering the evolution of telecommunication as the introduction of a new transportation system, that affects flows in existing transportation systems and the pattern of economic activities. Possible developments in the telecommunication infrastructure, associated changes in economic activity, and how they affect transportation and land use are described. Conclusions regarding development in the spatial pattern and transportation are presented.
