Samenvatting

The development described in this paper relates to an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) project entitled "Improving Accessibility for those with Impaired Mobility" (I-AIM). I-AIM develops a telematics-based device to attach to wheelchairs (both manual or electronic) to provide a navigation aid in the built environment. The device comprises a simple visual display which informs the user of the most practical and shortest route to his/her preferred destination. The device will communicate with a low cost network of navigation nodes. Close proximity (5-10cm) operation ensures total predictability of the users positional orientation. The simple visual user interface is suitable for wheelchair users with various disabilities.
