Samenvatting

Public administrations all over the world are looking for new methodologies and tools to face traffic congestion and pollution problems in order to obtain an efficient and environmentally sustainable city. Looking at the new technologies, the City Council of Naples is promoting an advanced telematic system to manage the traffic and a pilot study on a fleet of low emission vehicles using different fuel sources. The traffic management system is based on an integrated and modular architecture. It is composed of a Network Monitoring, to measure traffic parameters, a Collective Route Guidance System, through Variable Message Signs, an Individual Route Guidance System, a fleet of Floating Probe Cars and a Supervisor System which collects information, performs on line estimation of traffic state (path flows) for the whole city, and provides common strategies to manage and control the traffic. This system is then integrated with other existing or under development ones such as Traffic Light Control, Environmental Monitoring, Transport Planning and Public Transport Monitoring system. Each vehicle of the low emission fleet (electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, methane vehicles) is equipped with a individual Guidance System, and acts as a dynamic sensor providing on line traffic data, including travel time, for the overall traffic management.
