A literature review is made on the consequences of developments in telematics (telecommunication and information) for the mobility. A number of dimensions which can be considered in the relationships between telematics and mobility are described, as well as the correlation between the different dimensions. Because mobility is related to movements and movements are derivations from activity patterns, emphasis is laid on the consequences of telematics on activity patterns. Attention is paid to the possible substitution of physical movements for information transport. Substitution of personal transport by information transport will occur more often because the telecommunication networks are become cheaper, energy prices are getting higher and leisure time is becoming more important. Teleworking, teleshopping, teleconferences and telebanking are mentioned.
