Due to the increasing density and increasing number of truck traffic on motorways in Germany, not all truck drivers find a suitable parking place for breaks and longer rest periods. In addition to the conventional extension and new building of rest areas, current pilot projects on intelligent controlled truck parking are attempting to find new approaches and concepts to improve the difficult parking situation for all involved. The new Intelligent Controlled Compact Parking control procedure is characterized by the fact that trucks are parking side by side without driving lanes between trucks in a compact, time-sorted manner directly behind and next to each other. With the help of variable message signs above the rows of parking stands, drivers receive an offer of departure times. Within the scope of the research project, the development of an algorithm and the evaluation of the application in the reality of a rest area specially equipped for compact parking were supervised. To prove functionality, the pilot project at the Jura West rest area was examined to determine to what extent the additional capacity of 35 parking stands created was used by using the compact parking system. It was also examined to what extent the vehicles were parked one behind the other in chronological order or if, in the event of potential blockages, there were conflict-free alternative options for leaving the parking area. The results of the study have shown that an average of 93% of the total parking area (up to 100% on individual days) was occupied in the highly demanded weekday group Monday to Thursday. On weekends, however, demand is so low (only 52% on average) that even the lower capacity of conventional parking was not used. During the time sorting test for a total of 675 real parking processes, it has been found that 90% of the vehicles parked one after another in chronological order and only for 10% there was a potential blockage, but predominantly with an alternative exit option via a neighbouring row. In total, the functionality, operational reliability and high system availability of the compact parking system could be proven. (Author/publisher)
