Samenvatting

In the twentieth century a rapid development of information and communication technology is experienced. Developments enable individuals to reorganize daily life quite fundamentally, because interaction is becoming possible without making trips. The role of distance is changing because distance is almost unimportant for interaction by telecommunications, whereas it is still important when making physical trips. This feature suggests that spatial organization will be altered when telecommunications become more important. This paper gives a framework for various contributions. After a discussion about the difficult issue of the concept of telework, two major forces are described: (1) the changes in the organization of labour; and (2) the growth and possibilities of telematics.
