Samenvatting

Collisions within intersections constitute approximately twenty-six percent of all Police-reported crashes each year. Of these crashes, forty-six percent occur at unsignalized intersections, accounting for 66% of intersection crash fatalities. Approximately 75% of intersection crashes may be attributed to driver errors, such as failure to observe the traffic control or driver inattention. Veridian Engineering, with the assistance of Navigation Technologies, has developed an Intersection Collision Avoidance System (ICAS) to prevent collisions at intersections. This work is sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations' Office of Crash Avoidance Research (NHTSA OCAR). The ICAS uses roadway and traffic control data derived from an on-board geographical information system (GIS), along with other vehicle state information to detect potential violation of the intersection. This paper describes the system, the unique features of the map datafile, and illustrates results of system testing. (A*)
