This paper gives an EU policy review on issues of safety and security in transport. It considers the level of danger acceptable in real life situations; systems, rules and procedures aimed at preventing or detecting negligent, irresponsible or malicious behaviour; systems, rules and procedures to deal with mechanical or technological failures or natural phenomena which could threaten safety and security; and systems and procedures to protect people, goods, infrastructure and vehicles from harm. A summary of research projects in eight sub-themes is provided including: reporting and common guidance in road sector research; the best ways of implementing safety measures; the socio-economic effects of intelligent safety systems in road vehicles; design of automotive vehicle safety features; road, air and maritime transport infrastructure and vehicles; driver, passenger and non-user safety; and working conditions for drivers.
