Samenvatting

The number of road accidents in India has gone up from 57000 in 1961 to 148000 in 1980. Fatality rate per 1000 vehicles is approximately 60. Analysis of accident data shows that the main cause of accidents is the human factor. The task of communicating with the driver in India is very complex. The way road signs and signals and road markings are used in India is examined. Details are given of the driver guidance system implemented in 1982 for the 9th Asian games and of the traffic aid posts set up along a few important national highway routes.
