When a driver looks at a display screen, he is not able to pay adequate attention in front of him. In this paper, the authors present an analysis of the delay that takes place in the braking operation as a result of the driver looking at a display screen. They propose a calculation method in which they stochastically analyse delays in noticing danger ahead and in the braking operation. The concepts of "noticing time", "looking away time", "event response time", and "braking response time" are studied in experiments. The validity of the calculation method is verified by the experimental data. The authors reveal that it is possible to quantitatively infer the delay in the braking operation due to the driver looking at the display screen by comparing the calculated results with the data for when the driver is not looking away.
