Samenvatting

Requirements that a gravity model should satisfy if it is to describe observed data are examined. Two methods of fitting are considered; the method of maximum likelihood and the method of least squares. It is shown how the requirements depend upon the sampling distribution of the observed number of trips, and upon the mathematical form assumed for the function of separation. The paper is particularly concerned with requirements that are appropriate when no functional form is specified.
