Samenvatting
A model for frictional heat generation in a skidding tyre on a wet road pavement is postulated after which the results show that: (1) for a slider on a half space heat generated at the surface does not raise the slider temperature; (2) heat generation must be concentrated in a thin layer, otherwise thermal degradation will result; and (3) tyre damage may occur whenever, at average speeds, the coefficient of bulk friction (hysteresis friction) exceeds about 30% of the total friction.
