Following concern by cyclists over the installation of thermoplastic line markings on state highways, Transit New Zealand commissioned Opus Central Laboratories to test the properties of the new markings. In particular they examined the effect of skid resistance and line height of the markings on cycle stability, and also conducted a review of overseas thermoplastic guidelines. Although Transit implemented recommendations as a result of this work, further testing involving a wider range of cyclists and riding conditions was also proposed. Off-road tests were carried out where nine regular cyclists rode along or across wet thermoplastic lines and subjectively assessed their awareness of the lines and effect on stability and handling. A separate assessor also recorded any observed effects. Different cycle speeds, line thicknesses, riding positions, and tyre pressures were tested by each rider.
