One of a series of 28 papers, this paper provides a structured guide to the results of Research and Technical Development (RTD) projects relating to Safety and Security, carried out in transport research programmes throughout the European Research Area (ERA). Out of more than 5600 projects fromthe research programmes ultimately considered by the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC), a total of 520 projects deal partly or fully with the issues of Safety and Security. The paper looks at the scope of theme, including definition, topics and significance; the policy context; synthesis of findings from completed projects including reporting and common guidance, assessments, transport operation, transport infrastructure and vehicles, driver, passenger and non-user safety, qualifications/behaviour, working conditions and research gaps.
