Samenvatting

The ULTra personal rapid transit (PRT) system developed by Advanced Transport Systems Ltd of Bristol, UK, is described. It uses small four-seater electric vehicles automatically controlled on a concrete or steel guideway.Three case studies are presented for assessment of the system in use in alarge city (Cardiff), a 'new town' (Corby) and at an airport (Heathrow). Each case study includes a description of the network, an assessment of system performance (safety, security, ease of use, accessibility), and a financial and social assessment. The costs and benefits of each network are summarised. The financial and economic case for the PRT was evident, but the risks of adopting an innovative system were noted.
