This article considers ways to improve safety for cyclists. Factors included are cycle helmets, treatment of cyclists by other road users, and the promotion of cycling as a cause of road safety. Comparative risks of walking, cycling and driving are assessed. The author promotes the view that use of cycle helmets gives the impression that cycling is unsafe, and that skill and a sense of caution are more important factors in cycle safety. Cyclists gain from improvements in road safety, they should be seen as part of the normal road traffic environment, and the most straightforward way to make cycling safe is to increase the number of cyclists on the road.
