Samenvatting

This paper describes an experiment which undertook to obtain a method of signal controlled traffic merging in Lion Rock Tunnel, Hong Kong. Details of the traffic flow through the tunnel, including the peak traffic flows are presented. A system was introduced first manually, then with fixed time signals, and finally with vehicle activated signals to release traffic alternately from two traffic lanes to form a single lane of traffic to enter the tunnel. The results indicate that capacity is maintained, and may be 6% higher than before. Also, accident rate has decreased.
