The aim of this report is to define a method for measuring time headways (time gap) and also to describe how headways are changing over time. This study is also trying to estimate the different concerning private cars and other vehicles. The follow-up studies of vehicle speeds on rural roads made by the VTI since 1979 enabled VTI to study time headways. The main goal was to study the trend from 1987 to 1991. These are the results in short: (1) headways have not changed significantly during the period 1987-1991; (2) narrow roads have shorter headways; (3) cars have shorter headways than other vehicles; (4) headways are shorter in daylight than in the dark; and (5) the proportion of queues and the length of the queues have increased over the period.
