Samenvatting

The A3 is a major traffic corridor that passes through the Rheinland-Pfalz region of Germany. It carries up to 90,000 vehicles per day, resulting in a high demand among truck drivers for rest spaces. This has placed service areas on the A3 under severe strain. The solution was Telematics Controlled Parking (TCP), conceived by a public-private partnership consisting of Manns Ingenieure, the members of CENTRICO located in Rheinland-Pfalz and the road authority of Rheinland-Pfalz (LSV). TCP parks vehicles in lines according to their departure times, allowing the best possible use of available space. The entrance to the parking area has a barrier and TG 81 terminal from Asytec. Drivers enter their desired departure time and vehicle type. A space is then allocated behind a vehicle with an earlier departure time or at the head of a new line. In a pilot project at the Montabaur service area on the A3, TCP doubled the number of parking spaces and the system is working well. Driver response has generally been favourable.
