When a natural disaster strikes there comes a moment when it really is time to go. As the evacuations from hurricanes Katrina and Rita have shown, roads can quickly reach full capacity, leaving many people stuck and often frightened. This article explores how American Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technology might respond in 2006. ITS projects received close attention in 2005 as many US jurisdictions saw the problems of having deployed systems that did not comply with open standards. This document discusses existing systems and the outlook for 2006, and how emergency management is linked with ITS. For the covering abstract see ITRD E139966.
