Samenvatting

The field of time-use research has potentially much to offer travel-demand analysis and modelling, especially from the perspective of the activity-based approach to travel demand. This paper reviews time-use research and examines the implications of this work for travel-demand analysis and modelling. The discussion includes conceptual and methodological developments as well as empirical findings. The paper concludes that mutual benefits would accrue from greater interaction between these related fields of research. In particular, travel-demand researchers should find considerable value in the time-use research developments in data collection and in the empirical knowledge in the time-use literature concerning activity participation, especially trends in activity participation over time and among societies. On the other hand, some modelling efforts undertaken by travel-demand researchers, especially models of activity participation and scheduling, should be of considerable interest and value to time-use researchers.
