Research conducted at VTI, Sweden into emissions of particles less than 10 micrometres in size (PM10) is described. Particle emissions occur partly from vehicle exhausts, but also from wear of road pavements, tyres, brakes and through road service and maintenance. The adverse effect of PM10 on human health has led to the development of an environmental quality standard for PM10, which will be reinforced with limits for even smaller particles (PM2.5). The adverse effect of particles on the respiratory system are outlined. Research has been conducted on PM10 levels in Stockholm caused by studded winter tyres and road dust. Particles from the friction between the road surface and tyres are being analysed using VTI's experimental road simulator.
