Statistics are provided for the number of toll roads proposed worldwide and how much will be spent on them. Similar figures are provided for individual Latin American countries. A comparison is made of the toll roads planned in Mexico and in Argentina. In Mexico an already well established toll road network is being upgraded and its profitability improved. Details are given of restructuring planned for concession periods. In Argentina the emphasis is on reconstruction and maintenance of roads. Tolls here are lower than in Mexico and have helped win support for the toll road programme. The implementation of toll roads since 1980 is traced. The securitisation of toll roads in Latin America and the launching of bonds are discussed.
