With each of our communities focusing on increasing the mode share of active transport, pedestrian and cycling interaction is expected to increase into the future. The growth in pedestrian and cycling networks, and the resultant take up of these two modes, has resulted in increased pressure across both on-road and off-road facilities. This pressure can be successfully managed through the appropriate application of various tools, design strategies and policies. To manage these interactions the application of various innovative design and analysis tools is highlighted. This paper reviews the various tools, design strategies and policies available and concludes that there is room for improvement within our current approach to the management of the interaction of pedestrian and cyclist movements. This interaction is not only between these two modes but also with other road users.
