Samenvatting

This research note presents statistics on the number of fatalities and alcohol-related fatalities by state as well as the rate per vehicle miles of travel (VMT). The data used in the note uses the 2001 Final and 2002 Annual Report File (ARF) of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA's) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Annual VMT data by state is released by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Statistics is also given for the District of Columbia, and partly for Puerto Rico: for this country the VTM data is not available for 2002. The 2002 VMT for Arizona is a projection, and the 2002 VMTs for New Hampshire and North Carolina are preliminary. The number of alcohol-related fatalities are generated using blood alcohol concentration (BAC) values reported to FARS and imputed BAC values when they are not reported.
