Samenvatting

Based on a multi-phased national study of ITS and sustainable communities, this paper examines the use of ITS in three U.S. case studies and applies lessons from these case studies to possible future use of ITS to achieve environmental gain. The cases summarized in this paper - Santa Monica, the Midtown Greenway Corridor in Minneapolis, and the use of ITS on the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York - analyze various uses of ITS and how they might be more effectively used towards the goal of building sustainable communities. Drawing upon findings from these case studies and related instances around the US, a series of recommendations are made for integrating ITS into a more comprehensive approach to improving communities through information technology. Such a "place-based" technology approach, it is argued, is more consistent with the trends and priorities of livable communities. (A*)
