Samenvatting

South Africa needs to give urgent attention to the development of efficient and cost-effective public passenger transport systems. An essential component of such systems is modal integration. Through a study sponsored by the French government, the Lekoa-Vaal region, and the Sebokeng-Evaton conurbation in particular, was identified as providing a suitable area to develop and pilot a multi-modal integrated transport system. The components of the proposed framework for the system are: an internal, high-density corridor; interchange nodes; and external services. At present, the links between Sebokeng-Evaton and other cities in the region are provided by minibus-taxis and subsidized bus operations. A pilot is being implemented that will enable these operations to be undertaken jointly by an integrated bus/minibus-taxi service. (A) The French title of this paper is: "Vers un système de transport public intermodal à Sebokeng-Evaton, région de Lekoa-Vaal, Afrique du Sud".
