Samenvatting

This paper presents a framework for assessing the level of safety at an intersection. The methodology is based on a Safety Analysis CHain (SACH) which has five components including the traffic flow, number of conflicts, severity of conflicts, crashes and severity of crashes at intersection. Three models are proposed to run consecutively and quantify the components of the SACH. The casualty crash risk of a manoeuvre (CCRM) is derived to represent the safety performance of intersections. The CCRM reveals the safety level of intersections regarding the quantified components of the SACH. The framework outlined offers potential to proactively study and compare the safety performance of different intersection designs.
