Samenvatting

Town planning and road design are examined as they relate to Australian highway safety. The hierarchy of urban development is discussed, along with layout of both the road and pedestrian network and public transportation. Roadway standards and responsibility are described, and factors such as geometric properties, roadway surface, and control of vehicular conflict (medians and access) are included. General roadside design, involving common hazards (poles, supports, trees, etc.), guardrails, and spot improvements is considered.
