Samenvatting

The authors of this paper have reviewed before and after speeds at several newly installed speed humps. This paper includes the following: (1) before and after speed studies at various speed hump locations; (2) statistical tests of the speed parameters; (3) traffic accidents at or near such locations; and (4) current guidelines used by various road agencies for installation of speed humps. The paper presents all necessary issues related to speed, other traffic operations, and safety parameters. Access to emergency vehicles, school buses and delivery vans is also discussed, since it is necessary to provide access for these types of vehicles in residential neighbourhoods. The quantitative results of the statistical analysis are presented in support of the conclusions of this study. A critical review of the speed hump design standards and operational and safety characteristics is presented to allow readers to fully realize the advantages and disadvantages associated with speed humps as a speed control measure.
