Samenvatting

This report gives estimates of the volume of traffic in great britain in 1971 together with figures for earlier years. The figures are based on manual censuses at 1000 points giving levels for 1960 and 1966; estimates for the other years have been obtained by applying trends from regular censuses at fewer points. More detailed results are given of the continuous automatic census at 50 points on trunk, principal and other roads, excluding former unclassified roads, which has been in progress since january, 1956. Motor vehicle-kilometres travelled increased by about 61/2 per cent between 1970 and 1971; this was a larger increase than in recent years. In 1971 travel on motorways represented about 51/2 per cent of travel on all roads. (Author/publisher)
