Samenvatting

This report gives estimates of the volume of traffic in Geat Britain in 1972 together with figures for earlier years. The figures are based on manual censuses at over 1000 points giving levels for 1960 and 1966; estimates for the other years have been obtained by applying trends from regular censuses at fewer points. More detailed results are given of the continuous automatic census at 50 points on trunk, principal and other roads, excluding former unclassified roads, which has been in progress since January 1956. Motor vehicle-kilometres travelled increased by about 5 per cent between 1971 and 1972; this increase was less than for the previous year but near to the overall trend for recent years. In 1972 travel on motorways represented nearly 7 per cent of travel on all roads; flows are given for the census points on motorways where counts are made regularly. (Author/publisher)
