Samenvatting

One of the main causes of traffic congestion is the use of the private automobile, chosen as the mode of travel because it is the most flexible mode that best meets the travelers' needs. The article explores some of the ways to get out of the gridlock caused by too many cars on roads that can not handle them. The possibilities suggested in the article, such as the combination of innovative highway design, separation of traffic types, toll financing, variable pricing, and electronic toll collection will make it possible to offer drivers real alternatives to interlocked freeways.
