The urban expressways in Guangzhou have been playing an increasingly important role in releasing the traffic pressure as well as improving the efficiency of trips. However, the frequent occurrence of traffic congestion and accidents hinders the performance of the urban expressways. As a vital component of Guangzhou Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS), a system composed of the Traffic Data Collection System, the Arterial Detectionand Control System, the Entrance Ramp Control System and the Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) Surveillance System is being established, namely, Guangzhou Inner Road Traffic Control and Surveillance System, which will be playing a significant part in alleviating the congestion, reducing accidents and improving the traffic capacity on the expressway. This paper starts with a brief introduction to Guangzhou ITMS and Inner Ring Road Control and Surveillance System. On top of the demonstration of the major functions of each sub-system within the Inner Ring Road Control and Surveillance System, the article further analyses the key technology applied in the systemby its completion.
