Samenvatting

Legal and physical controls on traffic are discussed including traffic regulations, carriageway markings and road signs and signals. Air traffic control and the regulation of rail bound and other modes of public transport are described. Control strategies are specific to situations. The main motivations for traffic control are safety, the improvement of transport co-ordination, high transaction costs, environmental considerations, social considerations, resource conservation, the containment of market distortions, and the integration of transport into wider economic policies. A full range of techniques of traffic control is described. The potential of intelligent transport systems in the future is discussed briefly.
