Traffic impacts from the closing of Trondheim toll ring.

The Trondheim toll ring, Norway, came into operation in October 1991 and was removed in December 2005. A study was conducted to evaluate the traffic impacts of closing the toll ring. The toll ring was in operation Monday to Friday from 06:00 am until 06:00 pm and had, at closure, 24 charging points. The traffic was monitored for a period of four months. The results showed that closing the Trondheim toll ring resulted in a small increase in traffic over a 24-hour period, but the traffic distribution has changed with more traffic in the payment period. A few areas have experienced increased traffic during the opening hours of the toll ring. There was no significant change in traffic to the inner city. It was concluded that the toll ring had been a success as a financial instrument.
