Samenvatting

In France, fighting against traffic jam and car pollution, during the last few years the town of Strasbourg has become famous for its voluntarist policy of decreasing car traffic in its centre. The decrease of nearly 20% of the number of cars entering the town every day is one of the most significant achievements of this policy. In complement to a resolute action for setting up alternative means of mobility to the private car, this policy uses intelligent transport systems on a large scale. Initiatives have been taken as part of the EU EUROSCOPE project. Thanks to ITS, firstly, the hypercentre is returned to pedestrians and cyclists, while maintaining the traffic in its periphery to move freely. And subsequently, taking into account the interaction between urban and suburban networks, the traffic managers work closer with each other while the air quality surveillance chain and the new drivers information systems are coupled.
